1337-01-06, Tower

To the treasurer and barons of the exchequer and to the chamberlains. William de Clynton, earl of Huntingdon, and Juliana, his wife, have besought the king to provide them with a remedy, as they are bound him in 95/. 2s. 8d. of the debts of Juliana de Leybourn, grandmother of Juliana, whose heir she is, and they have an attermination of 100s. yearly for that sum, and although Juliana de Leybourn paid 467. 13s. 4d. thereof and had three tallies of the receipt of the exchequer, and by two of these tallies 35/. are allowed to the earl and his wife in the said 957. 2s. 8d., yet they have not obtained any allowance therefor because the third tally was burned by accident, and being renewed was afterwards lost by mishap, and a third could not be made according to the custom of the exchequer, and also because the renewal of that tally is not enrolled ; the king therefore orders the treasurer, barons and chamberlains to inspect the folios of tallies and the memoranda of the exchequer touching the premises, and if they find that 11/. 13s. 4d. were paid at the exchequer and a tally levied thereupon, and that no allowance has hitherto been made, then to cause the lost tally to be renewed and delivered to the earl and his wife, and to cause the said 117. 13s. 4d. to be allowed to them, notwithstanding the aforesaid causes and custom. By K. 14. Ralph de Crumbwell, knight, acknowledges that he owes to Geoffrey Tower. le Scrop 20/.; to be levied, in default of payment, of his lands and chattels in co. Nottingham. Cancelled on payment. Thomas de Langeleye acknowledges that he owes to John de Upton, citizen and vintner of London, 200/., to be levied, etc., in co. Oxford. The chancellor received the acknowledgment, 14. Hervey de Terlyng, clerc, acknowledges that he owes to John de Tower. Goldyngton, knight, 54 marks, to be levied, etc. in co. Essex. 15. Stephen Je Botiller of Northhalle acknowledges that he owes to John Tower. qa Neubury of London 20/., to be levied, etc. in co. Middlesex. Cancelled on payment. Errolment of release by Richard de la Bere of co. Dorset to Walter de Chesthonte of all his right and claim in the manor called Southhalle in Reynham co. Essex. Memorandum that Richard came into chancery in the chapel of Berkyn, near the Tower of London, on the morrow of the Assumption, and acknowledged the preceding deed. Enrolment of grant by John de Mikleham to Sir John de Westmancote, clerk, of the next presentation to the church of Mikelham, co. Surrey.
