the collectors in Sussex of three groats of every lay person. of swpersedeas until Whitsuntide next in favour of the barons of Cinque Ports and others avowing themselves to be of the liberty and willing to enjoy the same, and order to release any distress them made; as in consideration that the navy of those ports not without great cost be maintained, in order that the same not be lacking, King Edward I granted by letters patent, by the king, that all men of those ports and others aforesaid contribute, every man according to his means, to do the king's concerning his ships when by him commanded ; and for that arose touching the general words therein, that the barons. the ports might more conveniently perform their service, the late in parliament in the first year of his reign granted by letters likewise confirmed, that they should contribute to maintain perform the navy and service aforesaid of all their goods and within and without the said liberty, and should be compelled to do if need be by the mayors and jurats of the ports and the of Dovorre castle, and that such goods taxed for that service not be taxed to tallages or other charges whatsoever with goods ;_ and in a parliament holden in 15 Edward III it seemed to the king and council, and was by the prelates, earls, barons commons debated and agreed, that the barons and others aforesaid be quit of all tallages and charges granted by the commons of the realm in respect of their goods for which they were bound to contribute and did contribute as aforesaid.
